Choose Better

Our culture is chock full of two lies. One says “You should be better.” The other lie is the response, “You’re fine just the way you are, no need to change.” Deep down, we know both are wrong. Yet in the midst of this, God offers a third way—he offers change that leads to life.

Process, journal or discuss the themes of this article - here's a few questions to get the ball rolling...

Welcome to the Chaser–a few questions after the weekend service to start conversations. If this is your first time in a group, or your group has new members, take a few minutes and introduce yourself. Two truths and a lie is always a good place to start.

  1. Each person, share some milestones you have hit or are approaching. Things like 10 years (or 10 days) at the same job, paid off that credit card, kept that new year’s resolution for 3 months, etc.

Some follow up questions: What choices did you make along the way to get where you are now? How have you changed compared to who you were at the start of those journeys?

  2. Some of us may struggle with perfectionism. (No need to raise your hands.) How do we try to work our way to perfection?

Some follow up questions: Why do you think we choose to make things perfect? Has working for perfection ever backfired on you? What happened?

  3. Some of us may feel great the way we are. (You do you!) What makes you feel the most content and confident?

Some follow up questions: Why is choosing individuality so important to us? What does it mean to choose to put yourself at the center of your life’s story?

  4. A guy named Paul wrote about the tension between perfectionism and “you be you.” Read it out loud here.

Some follow up questions: What jumps out to you in Paul’s writing? According to Paul, how can we choose a new life?

More from the Weekend

The power to choose something better is hiding behind hundreds of small, day-to-day choices. This week, ask God what decision he is asking you to make. What choice is He putting in front of you? (Have a difficult conversation. Stop binging that series. Start listening to that podcast in the car.) And then do it.

Before you close the group, be sure to pray together. We’ll see you next week.
