Empires | Week 3: Worship

No matter who we are or where we come from, we all put our hope and security in something—a god, a job, our possessions, our achievements, political party, or a thousand other things. Put simply, everybody worships something. Yet history shows us that if we worship something other than God himself, it will inevitably disappoint us.

Process, journal or discuss the themes of this article - here's a few questions to get the ball rolling...

Welcome to the Chaser. During Empires, they’ll be a couple extra questions each week. And the extra questions will push a little deeper. Dive in. Give them a try.

  1. Et tu, Brute? Everyone has scars. Let’s talk about some physical ones. Pick your favorite scar or broken bone story, and share.

  2. Stuff, places, and popular figures capture our time and affections. Let’s explore how our affections turn into what we worship. Pull out your phone (or date book, I guess?) and give a tour of your calendar. After reviewing it, explain what your calendar says is important to you.

  3. Food. Then Football. Then God. Take the top two things from your calendar, add God into the mix, and rank them in order of importance. Be honest. This is totally a safe place to talk about it. Share your rankings and why you chose that order.

  4. When Brian was in Largo De Torre Argentina (the place Caesar died that’s now a litter box) we heard all things, except God, let us down. Tell a story about something you’ve trusted and then let you down. That could be a college degree, friends, politicians, Dunkin’ Donuts, family, etc.

  5. If we believe God will never let us down, why give anybody else the glory? Why give anybody else the worship? Someone play this song on your phone, TV or speakers. Listen closely to the words. Then as a group, answer the question. Why?

More from the Weekend

When you looked at your calendar, did you have any time scheduled with God? That might sound crazy, but the time we spend with people can show how much we value them. Put a daily appointment in there to be with God. Do it now. Even if you’re not sure what you believe, give it a try and see what happens.
