The Joy of Living for the Long Haul

We live in a culture that is obsessed with right now. We obsess over youth, crave the latest product or experience, and mortgage tomorrow for the enjoyment of today. But when it comes to building the meaningful, impactful life we all crave, our short-term focus isn’t going to cut it. Today we’re going to talk about what happens when you let God give you a long term vision for life.

Process, journal or discuss the themes of this article - here's a few questions to get the ball rolling...

Welcome to the Chaser–a few questions after the weekend service to start conversations and push a little deeper. Go on. Dive in.

  1. This week, we’re talking about the long haul and legacy. Take a moment and think of legacies you’re connected to. It could be a family, a business, a church, or the best shuffleboard squad on the block. Each person share, and be sure to include a story of how you’re connected.

  2. To get beyond short term thinking and into legacy thinking, we have to move past a culture that values immediate satisfaction. Think back over your week. Share some examples of where you made decisions that had zero impact on your legacy. Like buying something now cause it felt good. Or avoiding a tough conversation. (Don’t worry. We all do it.) Why do you think you made those calls?

  3. Whoever had the best story in question 2, read James 4:14 out loud. Go ahead and read it a couple times–it’s short. What do you feel when you read this verse? What does it make you think about legacy? Everyone share.

  4. We all want to build something lasting, and we just read we’ve got a time limit. Yet we’re still left with a basic question: how? What’s the model? How do you go about building that “thing bigger than yourself?” What role does God have in all this?

  5. Spend a few moments thinking about the type of legacy you want to leave. What would it look like in 1 year, 10 years, 50 years, and 100 years? Each person share that vision. And then share something you could do (or not do) today to start building it.

Once everyone has shared, take a moment and pray for each other before you end the group. You’ve shared areas where you have short term thinking, discussed models for legacy, and declared where you want to have impact in 100 years. That’s a big deal. Bless each other. Then come back next week.

More from the Weekend

No matter if you picked up a block of white oak after service or not, faith and action are at the heart of God. Have at least two specific conversations this week. One that encourages a person who is part of your legacy. And another thanking a person that has left a legacy in you.
